What Does A Perfumer Do?
The Perfumer is the person who creates perfumes. They must have an exceptional sense of smell, leading to them being called”the Nose” (French: le nez). The perfumer is considered an artist, capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with fragrance compositions.
At a basic level, a perfumer must have a knowledge of a wide variety of fragrance ingredients and their smells, and be able to distinguish each of the fragrance ingredients whether alone or in combination with others. They must know how each ingredient reveals itself through time with other ingredients.
How Does A Perfumer Work?
A perfumer will be given a specifications for the desired perfume. This will describe what the perfume should smell like or what feelings it should evoke in those who smell it, along with a maximum price. This allowance will determine what aromatics and ingredients can be used in the perfume. The perfumer will then blend multiple perfume mixtures to attempt to capture the desired feelings specified in the brief. After presenting the perfume mixtures to the customers, the perfume may meet with approval.
